Otalo Guide to Costa Rica

Costa Rica is an unbelievably diverse spot on our earth that is an easy flight from the United States. From live Volcanoes to gorgeous beaches to dense eco-jungles to historic ruins you can fill up a year checking out the country. Here are some of our favorite things to do in Costa Rica: * Tour Rincon de la Vieja National Park - volcano, waterfalls, mud baths, hot springs, it has it all. * Take a Canopy Tour in the jungle. There are many outfits that offer these tours which take you high in the the jungle canopy and allow you to walk between trees. * Arenal Volcano - this is Costa Rica's live volcano, which currently erupts. Check out Tabacon Hot Springs Resort & Spa for great, inexpensive massages. * Go fishing for Billfish off Pacific Coast - Playa del Coco and Playa Zancudo are where boats leave. Costa Rica is one of the great sportfishing capitals of the world. The Pacific side of the country has great Marlin, Dorado, Wahoo, and Sailfish. The Caribbean side are where you'll find the Snook and Tarpon fishing. * Walk through the Monteverde Biological Cloud Forest Reserve in the early morning. * See the view from Irazu Volcano * Just chill on one of the great Costa Rican beaches. Playa Montezuma - Funky beach with waterfalls and Playa Samara are awesome Pacific beaches. Playa Samara, Playa Cocies, Playa Mazanillo (best snorkling in the Caribbean), and Punta Uva are awesome Caribbean beaches. * Costa Rica is chock full of National Parks: Cahuita National Park, Chirripo National Park, Cocos Island National Park, Corcovado National Park, Arenal Volcano and its active volcano, Manuel Antonio National Park, Monteverde and Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserves, Pacuare River and Protected Zone, Rincón de la Vieja Volcano National Park. * Take a 2 day Pacuare River Rafting Trip (Class III - IV). There are great rafting trips in Costa Rica. El General is a great river for kayaking and there are multi-day trips offered by local outfits. Up north on the Pacific you'll find the Naranjo and Savegre rivers that have half-day trips and 2 day-trips respectively. * If surfing is your bag, it's a great country for you, especially on the Pacific. There are well known breaks and back country, secret breaks that you'll want to explore. Guanacaste on the Pacific has some of the most awesome breaks on the continent. Check out Playa Negra and Playa Grande in particular. There's also Playa del Coco and the Witches Rock break and Ollie's Point. If you're a beginner check out Tamarindo. In the south check out Dominical and Pavones Beach (which can get really big). * Make your trip to Costa Rica a chance to help out. There are a bunch of volunteer opportunities. You can help with conservation, help to build houses, teach English. Check out Travel to Teach and Volunteer Visions for some ideas.
