Tybee Island Vacations

If you're looking for a great vacation in the southeastern United States that has beaches, history, and culture, you need to go no further than the barrier islands of Georgia. Of course the best way to vacation in Tybee Island is to rent a beach house or vacation rental. Vacation rentals give you so much more space than a hotel room and for less money. And you get a kitchen so you don't have to go out for your midnight snack! Otalo.com One of the most beautiful and historic of these islands is Tybee Island. Located 18 miles southeast of Savannah, it has a wide 3 mile long white-sand beach on the Atlantic Ocean that is full of awesome. There are wonderful sand dunes bordering the length of the beach. On the south end of the island is an age-old pier and pavilion that is great for fishing and people-watching. If you love history, there is Fort Pulaski (National Monument). It is a Civil Ware era fort that was used to protect the sea approach to Savannah. Held by the Confederacy, it was the site of a siege by Union soldiers in an attempt to gain the fort. You can still see the damage from the Union cannon fire in the 7.5 foot solid brick walls. There is also the Tybee Island Museum at Fort Screven's Battery Garland. Fort Screven is a coastal defense fort first used during the Spanish American War, one of many coastal defense forts up and down the east coast of the USA. Be sure the check out the WWII submarine periscope located just inside the entrance. Just across from Fort Screven, you'll find Georgi'a tallest and oldest lighthouse, the Tybee Island Lighthouse which was built in 1773. You can climb the 187 steps to the top of the lighthouse and can tour the historic support buildings. At the Tybee Pavilion you'll find the Tybee Island Marine Science Center. It's a science exploration center and an aquarium with lots of touch tanks where you can touch the sea animals. If you want to rent a bike and cruise the beaches or streets of Tybee Island, head over to Fat Tire Bikes (1405 Butler Ave). They'll deliver bikes directly to your vacation rental! Tybee Island has great salt marshes, rivers, and coastal waterways to explore in a kayak. You can also get your kayak on by calling Sea Kayak Georgia (1102 Highway 80). There are lots of retaurants in Tybee Island, including AJ's Dockside Restaurant, The Crab Shack, Sundae Cafe, Fannies on the Beach, and the Dolphin Reef Sports Bar & Grill.
